In response to the long history of the silencing of women and girls, Whitney Bradshaw makes portraits of women screaming. Through her Outcry series, she provides space for women to practice speaking up and out for themselves, to be heard, supported, encouraged, and celebrated. Bradshaw initiated this social practice project the night of the Women’s March in 2018. Since then, she has photographed over 375 women. In her words, "I invite groups of women who don’t know one another to my studio for a gathering, effectively expanding our community while providing support for one another as we bravely let out feelings that have been silenced or dismissed in our culture. During each session, we talk about how our voices can save us and share self-defense strategies.” When seen together these intimate representations of individual power and expression become a monumental act of collective resistance. For this exhibition Wave Pool hosted ‘scream sessions’ where Bradshaw photographed local women for her project. These plus an additional 150+ images were hung floor to ceiling in a grid along Wave Pool’s main gallery walls.
