It is with every ounce of excitement that we can muster we announce the return of the Chase Public Response Project. We’re doing a few things differently:

1) Teaming up with Abby Mae Friend to support her show “WITH NO MEMORIES NO TIES NO PHANTOMS TO TEND FOR” at Wave Pool.

2) We’ll be hosting this response project at 2868 Colerain Avenue - just a block south of the gallery.

We will gather at Wave Pool at 6:00 to experience the exhibition, and at 7:00 we will all walk together down the block to the Chase Public Pop Up for the performances.

On January 27th, six exciting artists and thinkers have been invited to each perform ten minute responses to Eunsong Kim's poetic essay "Found, Found, Found: Lived, Lived, Lived," a brilliant piece of cultural criticism regarding Carrie Mae Weem's series From Here I Saw What Happened and I Cried. A beautiful and vulnerable indictment of the American tradition of cultural theft, historical and contemporary genocide, and the ways that different cultures carry that tradition of violence through their memory and their loss, Kim’s essay goes far deeper than any simple investigation or argument against cultural appropriation. 

Kim’s essay was also the conceptual impetus for Abby Mae Friend’s curatorial exhibition. 

The respondents have been given total autonomy to respond however feels most appropriate to them; which could vary from musical performance, to poetry, dance, lecture, rant, powerpoint, game, anything.

Inspired by pianist Brianna Matzke’s “The Stockhausen Response Project,” The Chase Public Response Project is an opportunity for creators and audiences to interact with art in a new way. Writers, artists, performers, and thinkers are assembled to give their interpretation and share their impressions of the selected piece; they are given free range to do so by any means they choose.

Chase Public is a collaborative space for art and assembly in Cincinnati. Chase Public was conceived with the intent to create an environment that could help balance consumption with creativity, individualism with collaboration, high art with honest work and plain language. Occupying a room that was previously Elyse's Passion, a feminist sex shop, Chase Public hosts poetry readings, music concerts, art openings, book signings, independent theater, stand-up comedy, hotly-contested debates, collaborative art-making, radical activism workshops, crazy-ass parties, and maybe one bird fight. Mostly poetry readings.
