Fried Green Tomatillos Opening

Wave Pool is thrilled to announce the next installation of Welcome (M)Art, a new program that blurs the lines between art gallery, grocery, and dinner party, providing a unique opportunity for social discourse in Cincinnati.

Socially Engaged Art has a history of using food to achieve both social connection and critical commentary. Food is often utilized as a quick convener of communities and can bring us easily into dialogue on issues of power, place, sustainability, and culture. Today, more and more emerging and established artists choose to work with food as process, subject, metaphor, and realization.

Wave Pool is pleased to introduce Stephanie Gonzalez’s exhibition, created in collaboration with visual artist Arynn Blazer, Fried Green Tomatillos. Stop down to the opening reception from 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM on Saturday, April 9th. There will be light bites provided by the artist and beverages for purchase at the gallery.

Fried Green Tomatillo is a food installation highlighting three central components in cuisines of the deep south and the global south: fried, greens, and sweet acid. This project suggests that each of these components found in cuisines from the gulf of Mexico to Louisiana are sites for creolized aromatic and savory flavors in southern cuisine. Stephanie Gonzalez is newly local to Cincinnati, moving to Cincinnati in 2020 from Los Angeles. Arynn Blazer is a Cincinnati-based visual artist who combines textiles with a love of plants and works as Director of Programming at The Cincinnati Museum Center.

The installation Fried Green Tomatillo will be on view at The Welcome Project from  April 9th – June 30th, 2022.
