Driving Lessons is an ongoing series of professional development workshops that prepares artists to succeed in their career and artistic practice through skill-building exercises with guest speakers and professionals. This spring's two-part workshop focuses on funding for artists, helping participants identify opportunities that match their goals and develop grant applications that clearly communicate purpose, budget, and outcomes.
The online session, led by Wave Pool director Boris Oicherman, introduces an approach to drafting grant applications using AI as a writing partner. Grant writing is often the gap between having a vision and getting it onto the page in a funder's language, and this session offers a practical way to close that gap.
I am an artist, curator, grants administrator, engineer… I've always had a hard time answering "what do you do" with a single word. It took me some years to realize that the difficulty was in having to segregate my work into fields, media, disciplines.
Artists can attach themselves to any field, have conversations with all other professions. The challenges that matter most don't fit into professional boundaries, they sit in culture: in how people experience, think, talk, and make meaning of things. At the moment, I serve as the Executive Director of Wave Pool. But whatever my job title is, I'm an artist, and this is the work I do.
