The Monument to Decent Human Beings

A public art work by Sara Torgison, 2023

The Monument to Decent Human Beings is a celebration of mostly anonymous people, and the moments of quiet kindness and respect for others that punctuate "ordinary" living. The intention is to uplift ourselves. May we contemplate the things that we have done well and commit to continued work for and with community.

Participants are invited to choose a color of clay slip and place a handprint on the painted surface of the monument structure. Then step into the podium and claim space for your own goodness and the love you give and receive. We will gladly help to document your moment as a living monument to human decency if you choose. Participation helps affirm the worth of decency in a public way.

This project was first displayed at NCECA 2023 in the Duke Energy Convention Center and will continue to make appearances at public events (like our Pool Party!) and other locations. If you’d like to host the sculpture, please reach out to wavepoolgallery@gmail.com!

This project is facilitated by Wave Pool and powered by Gary Gaffney.
